Sometimes, students just don’t know what you are asking
Check out this great video called, “What’s The Word” that teaches addition, subtraction, and multiplication terms. We all know that we’re going to need math in the future, so knowing the right terms in math is essential. Here’s a great video that teaches about the sum, difference, product, multiplier, and factors.
Two reasons to teach math terms
Any student, but PARTICULARLY English language learners, may answer a math problem incorrectly not because, for example, they don’t know
How much is 47- 8 ?
but rather, because they don’t know what you mean by “difference” in the question,
What is the difference between 47 and 8?
Similarly, word problems are notoriously difficult for students because they have difficulty figuring out what operation they should be using to solve a problem. Knowing math terms can help.
